How to use the 10/10/10 Rule for Easier Decisions

First shared by writer Suzy Welch, the 10/10/10 rule has become used by many. But first:

What is the 10/10/10 rule?

Will this matter in 10 minutes, 10 months, 10 years?

How does this help you? Follow these steps:

  1. Pick a decision you need to make, with at least 2 options.
  2. Write down how you’ll feel in 10 minutes, for each scenario.
  3. Do the same for 10 months.
  4. Do the same for 10 years.

What does this reframing do for you?

A. Defines what really impacts your life.

If the decision is about taking a new job, hopefully this rule will help you decide what is truly impactful to your life.

B. Defines what can probably be ignored.

If your decision is about whether or not you want to attend a friend’s gathering, you might see that it might feel bad now, but won’t matter in 10 months or years from now.

The 10/10/10 Rule can help give you perspective and space in a moment which leads to more grounded, thoughtful decisions.
