3 Ways to Tiptoe into a Vegan Diet for the Veg-Curious

In May 2016, I went vegan and my wife wasn’t thrilled.

She eventually came around if I agreed to manage the recipes and food planning. I had seen too many documentaries and been made aware of the animal welfare and carbon emissions impact to turn back.

Most people think it’s too restrictive or scary.

They can’t imagine themselves satisfied & healthy on vegan diet.

Or they:

  • don’t know what to cook.
  • think it will feel too restrictive.
  • But, it doesn’t have to be so scary or unknown. There are few things you can do to make the transition easier.

Here’s how, step by step:

Step 1: Educate yourself on your ‘Why’.

There are many great documentaries on plant-based diets and their benefits. The trifecta:

  • Forks Over Knives (health-focus)
  • Cowspiracy (sustainability-focus)
  • Earthlings (animal welfare focus)

I originally wanted to be healthier and started with Forks Over Knives. Then I found Gary Yourofsky on Youtube and decided animal welfare was just as impactful for me.

Step 2: Reframe your meals — small substitutes are key.

Most meals are already pretty close to being vegan.

With some simple substitutes, you can go the rest of the way. I found a few YouTube channels that were critical in finding exciting recipes. There’s almost nothing you can’t have the vegan version of nowadays. Find a source of recipes and if you need some help, DM me.

At our house, we make sushi, chili, burgers, pancakes, spaghetti, tacos and tons of other delicious food & nobody feels restricted.

Step 3: Don’t “take away”. Try “crowding out” instead.

Don’t focus on the negative and say “I can’t have ____”.

Instead, fill your plate so full of delicious food you aren’t looking for more. Unprocessed plant foods aren’t as calorie-dense so you can have a ton more volume before you are full.

Take it a day at a time, be kind to your self, and don’t treat it as all-or-nothing.
